2012 will be a year of continued progress in the realm of health testing, as well as hopefully moving forward with my breeding program, and my involvement with the CWCCA (our parent club).
In February Ell will be due with puppies. This will be her 2nd litter and I'm cautiously optimistic about this breeding. Pups will be brindles or possibly blacks.
In March when Brewer, Ballantyne and Bolin turn two, I will have their hips/elbows done. Ava will also be done as when she turned two she was in standing heat. Four dogs to have tested at the same time?! $$$ I am going to be paying for that for awhile! But it is very important to me and for the health of my dogs. Im not anxious to breed any of them yet, as I will hopefully have an Ell pup to grow on, as well as a pup out of Minnie that should be coming this way if all goes well sometime this summer.
In April the Cardigan National is going to be happening in Ohio. Since I missed last years in Texas (the first I've missed since I started going in 2008) I told myself I'd never miss another one. Its the chance once a year I get to see some of my Cardi friends! Aside from email or facebook, it is the only face to face opportunity I would get to see my friends!
In May I will be frantically finalizing the CWCCA Supported Entry at the FMKC shows June 1, 2 and 3 in Fargo, ND. I am member in charge but have delegated much to others so I am not running around the show site trying to help the FMKC AND the Supported Entry at the same time. Margot the Briard will also be showing there with her half sister and full sister hopefully so that should be fun to catch up with the Briarders.
I will not be going to the Western Reserve this year as Jon Kimes, one of my mentors will be judging one day. Since he and Barb and I co-bred a litter I am unable to show under him, which is totally fine. He's hard on my dogs without showing under him ;) ha ha ha!!
The rest of the year is up in the air. I'm not sure which shows i will be able to show at or go to. Will depend on my work schedule and the judges I guess, and where the majors may or may not be.

A pretty good weekend
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of the Western Reserve had their annual Regional Specialty. Not only is it the largest regional specialty in the world, but this year was the record high for entries!!! The quality was deep in many classes and the line up for Best in Sweeps or Winner's Dog/Bitch was quite a sight to behold. There were six or seven Best In Show winners entered in in these shows, as well and very recognizable veterans coming back out in the ring for this specialty. In other words it was AWESOME!!
I was able to see many of my good friends there again, and meet more Cardigan people! Its really the whole reason I go. Ok MOST of the reason I go. And since I didn't make it to the National due to impending puppies, I had to make sure I went to CWCCWR this year. I don't want to forget anyone so won't name names but I do so enjoy this weekend.
It was a a goal of mine to be competitive at Specialties, and Supported Entries. I don't need to win (but it is nice) but I do want my dogs to be nice enough to be competitive. Going to the show and seeing the other dogs from a distance made me rethink why I was there. I should have gone home and pet every one of my dogs out.
Or so I thought :) Then the judging started....
Friday under breeder judges Ballantyne earned a 4th in sweeps and a 3rd in regular classes. Ava made the cut in breed in a quality filled ring. I was so surprised and humbled. Then Saturday Ballantyne earned a 4th in sweeps and a 2nd in regular classes. Ava was given consideration but no cut this day. Sunday with Ava not entered I entered the Naughty Bolin and she was 4th in sweeps and 3rd in regular classes. Ballantyne was 2nd in sweeps and 2 in Bred-by!! Even though both Naughties were completely stark naked their structure and movement gave them placements! I was in the ribbons every time! I guess my goal of being competitive at the largest regional specialty happened. And I want thank everyone that helped me to get here!! :)
These large specialties gives me time to talk to long time breeders like my mentors Barb Hoffman and Jon Kimes. In depth discussions talking about directions, goals, what I want out of a bitch or dog and where to TRY and find that. I also had other long time breeders go over my dogs. Connie Whan who has been instrumental in my breeding plans/goals, Paula O'donnell, Cindy Bossi, Nancy Wiloughby, Joanne and Ferris Beashau, Pixie Lauer, etc etc.Always nervous when people go over my dogs and even more happy when they LIKE them.
I was also quite blessed to have ringside praise about my girls. All three were given compliments ringside or out the ring about their movement, structure and/or temperament. To say I'm pleased in an understatement. And of course with the good, is the bad. Naked Naughties look tiny in comparison to bitches that have full coat and are larger. My girls are 27 pounds (the Naughties) and they looked like 12 week old puppies next to some of the bigger and more in coat bitches. I heard several comments about " I could never have a bitch that small" or something like that. But that's ok. I prefer them on the smaller side of the scale. They won't break down when herding or doing agility and they are slower to mature. I'm an impatient person so this drives me nuts to no end, but in the end is more rewarding.
It was great to be at the specialty where I was able to see dogs that I had considered for stud dogs for my girls. The ability to go over them in person, see them move, ask questions about health testing, what the stud dog has thrown (i.e. bad bites, blue eyes, pinks, fluffs, etc etc) is awesome and every breeder I talked to was completely honest and upfront about what they did or didn't know.
On top of all of this the camaraderie that is there with all of the Cardigan fanciers is just amazing. Saying good morning to everyone you pass, able to sit anywhere along ringside and strike up a conversation is just awesome. These people are amazing.
I wanted to personally thank the CWCCWR club members and the Greig family for all their hard work to get the show to the level it is. Quality judges, amazing food, kick a$$ ring stewards and all the quality dogs makes the 16 hours of driving each way totally worth it!!!
A special thanks to Mandy and Cindy Bossi for the early morning McDonald's Tea! You gals are lifesavers!! And thanks for making my throat hurt from laughing so hard! I wish everyone lived closer together so we could hang out way more often! :)

ok ok i'm going
I had my rubber arm twisted into going to Western Reserve again.
There is so much fun at this show that I 'had' to go. There are some 'newbies' going this year that I'm excited to hang out with as well as the regulars. I'll be able to see Ell's littermate Flash and her puppies out of Brett so that will be a learning experience and fun at the same time!
This show is like a mini national with so many of the people who attend the national also attending the WR. Its a three day show with two days sponsored by the CWCCWR and one day by the Lorain County KC. I've entered Ell and Ava and am planning on taking Brewer and Ballantyne with as well so I can get my mentor's thoughts on them as they are growing up. Ava is entered in Sweeps all three days too so that will give us extra ring time training! Look out! :)
I can't wait!

CWCCWR Regional Specialty
Greetings fellow bloggers!
I am finally home and finally functioning :) I have a lot of work to do today but wanted to bring you all up to speed on what went on at the Western Reserve Specialty!
First off many thanks to those who made this show possible! The ring stewards, the catered lunches, the meeting of other blogger friends (Kate says way more on her blog than in person!) and Jeri was so much fun to meet and talk to and listen to Vivian and Kathy give puppy evals. I learn a lot when I do this listening!
Many thanks to Joanne and Ferris for letting me stay in the camper again and set up with them, and for taking me all over NE Ohio and western PA in the following days after the WR. Photos should be coming sooner than later :)
In my dogs' news, Justice was in the 9-12 puppy class. All three days of regular and sweeps classes he was the only dog. The good news was I still earned Sweeps money so I cannot complain :)
Ell was entered in Open two days and on her first day under breeder judge Kim Neilsen, she was awarded 4th place in the tough open bitch class. His comments were (verbatum) "I think this bitch is a lovely, typey bitch, much like the 3rd place bitch (it was Ell's sister Flash) and that she moves the same coming to you as the 3rd place bitch does. He would like to see more fill of muzzle but other than that thought she was a lovely side mover and excelled in breed type.
Flash, Ell's littersister was 3rd that day under Kim Neilsen, and then won the open bitch class on Saturday under breeder judge Nancy Cunliffe and then on Sunday won the Open bitch class. I know on Saturday under Nancy Cunliffe, Flash was Reserve Winner's bitch and Flash/Ell's grandmother Hannah (Merrymoon Noblestar Hot Ice) was Best Veteran Bitch and Best Opposite Sex!! She is 11 1/2 years old! Talk about a great day for Merrymoon! I was so happy for Barb Hoffman, my mentor, and her winnings! On Friday Hunter, aka Merrymoon Firestorm was Best Veteran Dog and Hannah was Best Veteran Bitch. Truly a testimony to Barb's sound breeding program who can have an 11 1/2 year old and a 13 year old in veterans and still be competitive with the younger dogs and look much younger than the other veterans out there! Ok I'll stop gushing :)
I had entered Ell in A-O-H on the sunday supported entry and during the final lineup for Winner's Bitch the judge remarked how lovely his lineup of bitches were, including the single entry classes. that was great to hear :)
Its nice when you can go to the largest specialty in the world for Cardigans and place in competitive classes under breeder judges. It sure makes the all breed shows and judges seem a lot less important :)

Western Reserve here I come!
I am going to have a super busy day tomorrow in getting ready for the Western Reserve I've entered and decided to go! I will be gone TWELVE days as I have a pigeon show to judge on my way out to Ohio and then the weekend after is Michigan Fiber Fest where I have sheep to show. Wish me luck! And I'll try and catch up with my blogger buddies when and if I can along the way!
